My father recently passed from a cancer. We had very short notice, in-fact he was hospitalized from the day he was told it is cancer and terminal. He only was expected to have somewhere from a few days to a few months. The hospital - only next door was a horrible place - rude, uncaring incompetent staff (although not all). It is astounding how you can have hell on earth, and literally just next door you can have a place like St. Lukes.

I have never in my entire life visited such a warm welcoming place. Every person there had time for you. To put this into perspective - the patients there are there to die. Two of the rooms are actually cold-rooms for the recently deceased. So how can this place be so wonderful, it was almost a happy place. My Dad was an introvert who hated asking strangers for help, but somehow the staff there made it easy. They made sure that pain management was kept well on top of, and regularly assessed mood.

Anybody trying to cope with a family member dying will probably relate to the fact that you can feel guilty, just for going home. You can feel guilty for going to work or taking any time for yourself. The level of care given by St Lukes helped greatly with that.

My fathers death in the hospital would have been a very painful, scary and agonizing experience and scaring for the survivors. St Lukes made the experience as positive as it possible could be. I can look back on moments I spoke to my dad in his last days without trauma.

I assume that anybody reading this review isn't actually getting to chose where they or a loved one goes, and are just looking to know what to expect. So for that: the rooms all have a TV and remotes and power sockets, there is also WiFi. The beds are adjustable and can be elevated and lowered. Wheelchairs and walking assistance is there. The patients wishes are always respected, although they may advise - patients are as independent as they need to be.

There is a wonderful garden, with plenty of space for privacy. A family room can be used for private discussion away from the bed. The great attitude of the staff is infectious, even fellow patients and visitors seemed especially kind and respectful.
